Mesage from The Secretary General of the NIGIMUN 2007 Conference

It is our pleasure to welcome all delegates of the Nigerian International Model United Nations Conference to NIGIMUN 2007.

We remember the very intense, high level deliberations and expressions that were the highlights of last year’s conference, aptly themed “Peace and Conflict Resolution –from Words to Action”. It gave us all the opportunity to put voice and actions to our thoughts and inclinations.

This year will be a most memorable conference with top notch administration, prominent Guest Speakers and high level interactions with Heads of Foreign Missions in Nigeria on the theme ‘Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion: Our Collective Responsibility”.

Significantly, the lingering problems associated with injuries and unsafe behaviours are deeply rooted in awareness-levels, political will, and approaches of individuals, communities and governments. As youth, we can promote safety measures in our societies if we dare to critically assess the problem, encourage national-level safety strategies and implement specific workable interventions in order to establish a permanent state of vigilance and develop the mechanisms to control danger on a continuous basis.

As Co-Secretary General for NIGIMUN 2007, we are extremely delighted and well positioned to present you a conference of depth, pragmatism and effective resolutions.

Once again, welcome to NIGIMUN 2007.

Mr. Nuhu Aliyu & Miss Chioma Ugwu (Co-Secretary General)

Overview:

Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion: Our Collective Responsibility.

In the cause of our everyday activities, we are constantly exposed to a barrage of risks and injuries rising from road, home and school accidents, workplace injuries, firearm related injuries, drug abuse and violence.

Safety relates to the prevention and control of injuries, both physical and psychological to individuals and communities. The lingering problems associated with injuries and unsafe behaviours are deeply rooted in awareness-levels, political will, integrated approach and sustained initiatives of individuals, communities and governments.

It is possible to promote safety measures in our societies by acting on the structures, environments and behaviours of individuals and communities toward achieving a climate of peace, justice and equity, freedom from violence, respect of values as well as the physical, material and psychological integrity of individuals.

We need to critically assess the problem, prepare national-level safety strategies, allocate adequate financial and trained human resources and effectively implement specific workable interventions in order to establish a permanent state of vigilance and develop the mechanisms to control danger on a continuous basis.

Human life remains an invaluable resource. The losses and suffering associated with accidents and injuries are preventable. We must decide to end the carnage on our roads, violence in our schools, and losses in our lives.

Let’s make safety a priority, today.
