INTRODUCTION:

Nigerian International Secondary Schools Model United Nations (NISSMUN) Conference is a yearly interactive educational event, recognized by the United Nations, for senior secondary school students within and outside the country. These students, known as delegates at the conference, take on roles as representatives of United Nations member to discuss and debate most pressing global issues, and proffer innovative solutions to the problems. NISSMUN delegates use this conference to develop their diplomatic skills and relations needed to build a more tolerant and peaceful future. It creates an avenue for these delegates to build valuable friendships and promote cooperation.

NISSMUN Conference broadens the horizon of participating students and creates more awareness on real life issues affecting our world today. It provides an avenue for the participants to have fresh knowledge and understanding of international activities and encourages them to be more involved in world affairs. The students at the end of the conference leave with fresh drive for success, enhanced skills and self-assurance to grow and become assets to themselves, their schools and the society as a whole. The experience they gain from this conference will assist in building their resilience to real life challenges and leadership problems they may encounter.

The committee and interactive sessions give the participants the chance to understand and realize the need to utilize youth creativity and strength to create a more tolerant and peaceful society which is required in the world today.

 

How Does Model United Nations Operate:

The basic principles of Model United Nations remain the same; regardless of where the conference is taking place:

  1. Each delegate is assigned a UN Member State and a UN body or Committee, and he/she assumes the role of that country’s representative at that UN body or committee.
  2. The delegate researches his/her country’s position on the selected committee topics, paying particular attention to their country’s perspective on the topics to be discussed at the Committee Sessions. The topics are issues of global importance.
  3. The committee sessions are held in accordance with Rules of Procedure. The delegates present statements of their countries’ position then debate and negotiate with the other delegates, through formal and informal debates.
  4. At the end of the whole debate and negotiation, a consensus is reached and a resolution is drafted. The drafted resolution is further scrutinized for possible amendments and finally adopted through the majority vote as the final RESOLUTION.

Benefits of Model United Nations to Students:

1)          Model UN events provide active learning opportunities for delegates, allowing them to explore and analyze a situation affecting different people in unusual settings. They negotiate and reach consensus on the best action for all, working individually and as part of a group. Delegates develop their communication skills and build their self-confidence.

2)          Helps the students appreciate the relevance of academic study to real world problems and utilize the skills learned through their school’s course curriculum or degrees.

3)          Provides a multicultural learning experience, as it gives students the opportunity to meet others from diverse backgrounds and nationalities and helps them break out from their own prejudices and preconceptions about world affairs.

4)          Instills responsibility and discipline as the students assume the role of ambassadors and speak out on behalf of nations in a bid to resolving issues.

5)          The UN can be a difficult organization to grasp – it is not a world government, but a system of many organizations which together affect our lives in many ways. In order to influence the way in which the UN works, we must understand the UN – one way of doing this is by taking part in a Model UN event.

6)          Model UN work not only educates participants about the problems the world is facing, but also suggests the means by which progress can be made and problems resolved, peacefully and justly.

Students’ Eligibility:

  • Students should be in Senior Secondary 1, 2 or 3
  • They should understand the United Nations and its affairs
  • Verified research skills and ability to comprehend research topics
  • Effective communication skills
  • Students should possess leadership qualities
  • Students should be team players and eager to learn
  • Students should be disciplined and smart

How to Complete Registration Form:

  1. The participating students are required to select any 3 countries of their choice from the country/committee matrix. (1 out of the 3 countries could be allocated to you based on availability)
  2. Select any 3 committees of your choice from the country/committee matrix attached that you wish to simulate (1 out of the 3 committees could be allocated to you also depending on availability)
  3. Ensure that the country chosen is a member of the committee selected as appropriately indicated in the country/committee matrix.

 

Special Information on Country/Committee Selection and Assignment:

It is important to note that we cannot guarantee that each student will be assigned the country/committee of his or her choice. Certain criteria may result in a change in delegate’s choice. Some of which are:

  • Most countries are allocated on first-come, first-served basis. Delegates are therefore encouraged to send in their application forms early.
  • Essays are rated according to performance. The best essays will receive awards.

***       Students who apply to sit on the Security Council should be of academic excellence and possess good public presentation and analytical skills. Accompanying staff should please assist us in this regard.

 

Registration Deadline:

Submission of Essays and Position Papers

A compulsory essay on ‘Harnessing the energy and creativity of youth in peace building, tolerance and conflict resolution’ is to be submitted by each delegate. It should come along with evidence of payment of conference fee and complete registration form with one passport photograph attached.  These materials must be delivered on or before April 2, 2019 which is the deadline date.

All accepted delegates are expected to individually submit their countries’ Position Papers on or before August 6, 2019.

Please Note That The Position Paper Is Separate From The Compulsory Essay.

Basic Conference Information:

Requirement for Participation

All Senior Secondary School Students and schools are eligible to register and participate in the conference. Schools can enlist as many students as they want.

 

Acceptance of Application:

All applications and payments of conference fee must be received on or before April 2, 2019.

Confirmation of students’ participation will be sent to the schools, after receipt of the Registration Forms to on or before April 16, 2019.

NOTE: Registration forms must be returned with one (1) passport photograph, mandatory essays and evidence of payment of conference fee.

Position Papers:

All accepted delegates are expected to individually submit their countries Position Papers o or before August 6, 2019. Note: that the position paper is different from the mandatory essay.

 

Registration:

  • Registration begins 24 November, 2018 and ends April 2, 2019. Late registration by

Delegates will lead to 10% surcharge.

  • NigMUNS will not make any refund of payment from two months before the conference
  • If there is need to replace any delegate after registration, an administrative fee of N3000

will be required.

 

Arrival / Departure:

Delegates are expected to arrive from 1:00pm on the 26th October, 2019 and depart on or before 12noon on 30th October 2019.

Special Intergenerational Dialogue on Promoting youth creativity and involvement in peace, tolerance and conflict resolution:

In our society today, there are a lot of conflicts and violent activities spreading across national borders. Therefore, it is important to promote conflict resilience and tolerance to prevent conflict especially among the youth. Their strength in numbers and innovative minds can help build a peaceful and more cooperative world. We should encourage these young ones to be agents of peace by providing basic social amenities and employment opportunities for them to progress. A society that promotes cultural integration and youth development will be very effective in preventing youth violence and promoting peace and stability.

 

Guest Speakers

NISSMUN 2019 will attract notable and dynamic personalities relevant to International relations. Experienced minds who have insightful knowledge on the conference theme will also be invited. In addition, we will introduce in-committee guest speaker programme to ensure that all delegates have the opportunity to hear from real experts on their committee topics and contemporary issues to the conference. Training Programme for Accompanying Staff

The task of the NISSMUN Staff Adviser is more than just accompanying the students to the conference and monitoring them – it is a huge responsibility. We know how important a staff adviser is to student delegates in a Model UN Conference. It is the desire of Nigeria Model United Nations Society to build the capacities of the accompanying staff, enhance their skills in various competences through a Special Training Programme during the conference, and certificates of participation presented to them.

15th Anniversary Branded T-Shirts

As part of our 15th anniversary NISSMUN celebrations, all delegates and accompanying staff who register on or before the official deadline of April 2, 2019 are guaranteed to receive a branded t-shirt. We request delegates and staff to indicate their t-shirt sizes on the registration form to enable us meet everyone’s request.

Kindly note that the 15th anniversary t-shirts are meant for everyone. However, delegates and accompanying staff who missed the registration deadline would be required to pay a 10% surcharge as contained in the conference code of conduct.

The 15th anniversary T-shirts would be worn at the official Welcome Party for all delegates.

Raffle Tickets

The NISSMUN raffle ticket is a project of the Nigeria Model United Nations Society.  The draw will hold during the 15th anniversary of the NISSMUN conference, with several prizes to be won. The Grand prize of the 15th Anniversary fundraising Raffle Draw is- a Brand New TOYOTA HAICE BUS among other consolation prizes. We kindly request the support of schools in encouraging the full participation of the NISSMUN delegates and officials in the sales of the raffle tickets in their schools.

Purpose of Fundraising: The proceeds of this fundraising will be used in the purchase of Three (3) Coaster Buses for our programmes across the country. Our work depends on the generosity of people like you who share our desire for a better world for the youth.  Your support will produce a bounty of goodness and benefits that will last far beyond our lifetime.

Note:    A student whose ticket number wins the grand prize, donates the Bus to his/her school, with the Bus having an inscription …. “Donated by (student’s name and NigMUNS Delegate) to (Name of School)”, and the sum of N1,000,000 (one million naira) will be given to the student by the school in appreciation.

A Movie on the Theme of the Conference

Movies can be powerful and exciting educational tools, especially for educating young people about issues of life. As part of the 15th anniversary celebrations, the students will have the opportunity to watch a Movie related to theme of the conference – Harnessing the Energy and Creativity of Youth in Peace Building, Tolerance and Conflict Resolution. This movie will help the delegates retain the lessons and beautiful memories of the conference for a very long time.

World Cultural Night:

There are thousands of cultures and traditions across the world, each one unique in its own way. Experiencing different ways of life and discovering new cultural heritage have become leading motivations for people all over the world. This interaction between diverse cultures, can lead to tolerance, respect and mutual understanding among people.

The NISSMUN 2019 cultural night is to improve students’ relationships and interactions with each other. Our specific goal is to create cultural awareness and better understanding for all participating delegates, this translates to better relationships in the classroom, school environment, family and society. We should therefore recognize the role of cultural diversity for the benefit of present and future generations.

Celebrating our Cultural diversity makes life vibrant, richer and more interesting, because it allows us to interact with each other and to better appreciate our own culture. Respect for cultural diversity is the starting point for peaceful and inclusive society. It is an opportunity to unify the future generations and to celebrate all the richness and benefits we get from being such a diverse community.

World Food Arena:

One of the many ways people showcase their culture is through food. It is an important part of any celebration across the world, regardless of values or religion. It can unite and strengthen community bonds.

The NISSMUN World Food Arena offers the diplomatic missions in Nigeria, a unique opportunity to showcase their cultural identity through food. The students will have a handful of opportunities to taste the various food delicacies provided by the Embassies/High Commissions.

Gala and Awards Night:

The Gala/Awards Night, a very special event that brings the NISSMUN Conference 2019 celebration to its climax. It is where we recognize outstanding students and Institutions, role models whose achievements are a source of pride and inspiration to young people. We also use this opportunity to show gratitude to staff advisers for their continued support.

The event aims to provide delegates the opportunity to interact freely with very important personalities and diplomats in an atmosphere devoid of the usual protocol associated with the offices of these personalities.

Participating schools are expected to take advantage of the unique nature of the NISSMUN conference and advertise their schools and facilities in the 15th edition of NISSMUN conference brochure. The conference brochure would be sent to other Model United Nations clubs around the world, Embassies, government agencies in Nigeria, stakeholders and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Harnessing the Energy and Creativity of Youth in Peacebuilding, Tolerance and Conflict Resolution

Our ever growing world is characterized by acts of intolerance, violence, conflict, inequality and injustice. There is so much destruction in the world and these vices are threatening the lives of our youth. We owe the next generation the right to a peaceful life because the wealth of every country lies in its youth. Young people are knowledgeable innovative, futuristic thinkers that can help propel conflict resolution ideas and promote diplomatic and peaceful means of dispute settlement while ensuring no one is left behind. These young ones show high level of tolerance because of the understanding and mutual respect they have for each other. Their passion, discipline and open-mindedness can be used as a tool to achieve desired development objectives of a country.

Youth are key stakeholders in peace and conflict resolution but when exposed to predatory agents they stand a chance of being used as elements of violence, hooliganism and disaster. We must therefore invest in their education using their abilities and talents to strengthen the foundation of societies and improve their participation in creating innovative strategies for peacebuilding. The emergence of the internet and social media has taken the world to a new era especially for young people who are tech savvy. They can use these platforms to promote peace and resolve disputes. Youth representation and involvement can help promote tolerance by fostering mutual understanding and respect between people making the world more peaceful for us all to function effectively.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 of December 9, 2015 recognizes the strength and importance of young people in peace and conflict resolution. This historic resolution focused on the role of young men and women in peace building and countering violent extremism. It is an unprecedented acknowledgement of the urgent need to engage young people in promoting peace, stability and development. Young people need to get the recognition they deserve and should no longer be seen as victims and perpetrators of violence. We have to work towards providing a better world where young people can access, live and learn.

The strength of the youth is in their number and innovative minds. At 1.8 billion, the current generation of young people aged between 10 and 24 years old is the largest ever known. This youth bulge should be seen as an advantage in peace building and not as a threat to global stability. There is a misconception that young people are a demographic easily driven into violence and extremist ideologies, and this conception critically fails to note young people’s vast and largely untapped capacity for peace building. Young men and women toil tirelessly to ensure security in their streets, peace in their homes and justice in their communities. They are eager to take action and all their energy should be properly utilized but it is good to note that social alienation can push them to join movements that are counterproductive. Encouraging youth participation in peace building will mark a shift in the way the world seeks to end violence and build inclusive societies. Now is therefore the time to harness the youth bulge for sustainable peace and conflict resolution.

 

Objectives of NISSMUN 2019 Conference

The purpose of the NISSMUN 2019 include;

Nigeria Model United Nations Society (NigMUNS)

Nigeria Model United Nations Society (NigMUNS) is a non-governmental organization registered under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is also recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has a Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Nigeria Model United Nations Society also prides itself in being the founder of the Model United Nations culture in Nigeria having over 30,000 delegates to show for it. The organization organizes innovative and educational programmes that create a platform for young students to simulate the activities of the United Nations and other international organisations.

NigMUNS promotes interaction and dialogue among young people from different backgrounds, formulating peaceful resolutions to world’s problems and preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s leadership positions.

As we celebrate our 15th annual conference, we want to continue grooming young students who will use their skills and creative minds to build a more peaceful and tolerant society. Through our various annual conferences which include; Junior Schools International Model United Nations (JUNSIMUN); Lagos Regional Secondary Schools Model United Nations (LARSSMUN); Nigerian International Secondary Schools Model United Nations (NISSMUN); and the Nigerian International Tertiary Model United Nations (NITIMUN), we educate these young people and engage them in discussions about real world issues and how they can help solve them.

Our conferences give students the opportunity to explore and discover their talents and skills. It is an opportunity for young people to challenge themselves and face their fears and also develop their public speaking and communications skills. Through the United Nations simulations, they get to advance their knowledge about certain issues and become more interested and involved in world affairs.  The experience they get from their interactions with each other stays with them for life and helps shape them to become ambassadors for peace.
