Message from the Secretary General of the NIGIMUN 2006

Fellow students, distinguished delegates and invited Guests, you are all welcome to the NIGIMUN 2006 Conference.

The NIGIMUN Conference, which had her maiden edition last year, is proud to have students from Tertiary Institutions within and outside Nigeria in Port Harcourt for the Nigerian International Model United Nations Conference.

As we deliberate on this year’s theme: Peace and Conflict Resolution: From Words to Action, it is imperative that we all keep in mind our responsibilities as citizens in this global village and the fact that violence has never solved what dialogue can achieve. It is clear that in this century the threat to global peace and stability has never been greater and its consequences likely to be more devastating than ever.

The time has come for us all to move from our drawing boards and employ all resources to ensure peace and stability for the well being of citizens across the globe.

May our deliberations meet with possible resolutions that can produce lasting global peace.

Let NIGIMUN 2006 be your excuse to visit and enjoy the luxurious beauty of Port Harcourt, the Garden City.

You are welcome to NIGIMUN 2006.

Marvin Barivure Sigalo  & Ms. Kari Gloria Ikibah
Co-Secretary Generals

Overview:

Peace and Conflict Resolution: From Words To Action:

The world today is passing through an environment full of tensions, violence, declining values, injustice, reduced tolerance and respect for human rights. The gun culture has already taken a dominant position in our society, threatening the future of the youth who deserve a peaceful and better quality of life.

There is no arm conflict without the participation of youth. The last decade has seen an unprecedented increase in the involvement of young people both as victims and as perpetrators.

Youth are unfortunate instruments in conflicts because of circumstances beyond their control, like lack of access to basic and social services, such as education and health, unemployment and uncertain future. The youth yearn for a scream of conscience that expresses their hope and aspiration. As they look around and find no one offering relief, they become vulnerable to ideas of extremist elements and their illegitimate aims.

The best way to prevent them is to promote healthy and balanced economic and social development combined with human rights and political arrangement in which all groups are fairly represented and supported by good governance. In many recent conflicts, there have been clear signs of a cycle of violence from one generation to another. The major challenge before the international community is how to break such cycles and address the multiple and complex root challenges to peace and development.

Education is the most important lever for promoting tolerance, dialogue and respect for diversity, human rights/democratic principles and ultimately peace. Dialogue is central to the promotion of peace and it is only through a whole hearted and committed practice of dialogue can conflicts be resolved, disagreements overcome and discord healed.

Adult leaders, parliamentarians and policy makers at the local, state, national and international levels should agree that they are responsible for ensuring that the 21st century is characterized as a century of peace. We all need to translate those sweet words of ours into action.
