Message from the Secretary General of the NISSMUN Conference:
On behalf of the Conference Committee, we welcome you all to the 2006 NISSMUN Conference!
Our focus last year was on the MDGs and the UN Reforms. Whilst it gave many of us an opening into the goals that Nations have agreed to pursue on the international, regional and local levels, there are yet more pressing issues to deliberate on.
The theme for the 2006 NISSMUN Conference is “Peace and Women Empowerment through the ICTs”.
It is clear that the pursuit of peace and the empowerment of women have been a continuous one. We shall take a more focused look at how nations can engage strategies for the attainment of peace and security, as well as women empowerment through the application of Information and Communication Technology tools.
We are therefore happy to receive NISSMUN Conference delegates who would be representing One Hundred Member States and simulating seven Committees of the United Nations.
There will be intense activities with Committee Sessions, External Speakers Forum and visits to Embassies of some Member States during the Conference but there will also be moments to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of Abuja, the beautiful Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
Once again, you are welcome!
Nasir K. Mohammed & Miss Ozioma Osuagwu
- Co-Secretary Generals
Overview:
Promoting Peace and Women Empowerment through the ICTs:
The modern world is becoming smaller, highly integrated and technologically more advanced. It is also becoming highly fragmented less peaceful and unsafe for both present and future generations. Globalization and the Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) have made the world smaller – a village.
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are usually understood to include radio, telephone, fax, television, networked computers and the Internet. They facilitate by electronic means, the creation, storage, management and dissemination of information.
ICTs play a growing role in the world’s societies and have the potential to help disadvantaged groups increase their participation in the civic, social, political and economic processes critical to achieving change. ICTs can empower women and help them surmount gender inequality by raising the awareness of their social and political status and creating new opportunities.
Women and girls are increasingly taking advantage of ICTs in all spheres of life, thus confirming that ICT can be a tool to promote gender equality and women empowerment. However, there are factors hindering women’s access to ICTs. These include; cultural and religious sensitivity; illiteracy and technical education; restricted access to resources due to prejudices and inequitable family norms.
ICTs can also contribute significantly to the promotion of peace and non-violent resolution of conflicts. We are in a world marked by tension and daily reports of murder, death, rape, crime and war. Only rarely, do we have stories about people rising above violence and hatred to resolve conflicts.
We need a counterpoint to the news emphasis on violence. We need to show our children that there are non-violent ways of resolving conflicts and that tolerance and respect is the only way to a more peaceful world.
