WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL: NISSMUN 2017

It is my honoured privilege and delight to welcome all delegates to NISSMUN 2017.

Last year’s conference was truly challenging, motivating and interesting as I emerged the Secretary General of NISSMUN from a very keenly contested election. I would therefore like to thank my school and teachers at Capital Science Academy Kuje Abuja for their invaluable investment in my personality. I would also like to thank my parents, family and friends for their significant contribution to the person I am becoming. Thank you.

This year’s NISSMUN Conference promises yet another exhilarating adventure into the world of the United Nations as we get ready to tackle a pressing world problem and proffer the changes that can make a difference.

This year, at NISSMUN 2017, we are faced with the problem of youth and cybercrime as we make deliberations under the theme: Preventing Youth from Engaging in Cybercrime.

This is an interesting but gravely serious global concern. The internet remains a wonderful gift to our generation. It is the backbone of everything we do, from reading via Kindle, messaging via WhatsApp, pictures via Snapchat, videos via YouTube, to updating statuses via Facebook. Yet, from this delightful wonder has sprung up its twin evil: Cybercrime.

Cybercrime has wrecked great financial havoc to individuals, organizations and governments all over the world. Reports reveal that from 2013 to 2015, the cybercrime costs quadrupled, and it looks like there will be another quadrupling from now till 2019. According to Forbes, Cybercrime cost is projected to reach $2 trillion dollars by 2019.

Unfortunately, many perpetrators of these cybercrimes are young people between the ages of 14 and 25. How can we help them say No to cybercrime? What is the position and thrust of UN Member states regarding this escalating trend?

Dear delegates, we have got our work cut out for us. NISSMUN 2017 presents us a tremendous opportunity to act as change agents and global actors for a world where young people and the internet are a commendable pair –not for cybercrime – but cyber solutions.

Once again, you are welcome to NISSMUN 2017!
